Found in The Washington Post this past Sunday morning, a curious column from the reliably reactionary quill of George Will, in which he speculates aloud why Liberals haven’t embraced Sherrod Brown in the same way they’ve anointed Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton as their best choices for 2016.  He even endorses one! of Brown’s positions.  Why would Will offer Senator Brown to the other side?  I can think of 10 reasons…

  1. Will respects the principled opposition in a bare-knuckled contest of ideology but has little tolerance for fluffy, mealy-mouthed opportunists on either side of the aisle (ahem Ted Cruz).
  2. Brown, as much as I respect him, has little chance in a national election.  If promoting him succeeds, it only solidifies the Republican’s hopes for a big 2016 win.
  3. Sherrod Brown has both an X chromosome and a Y chromosome.
  4. George Will is a fluffy, mealy-mouthed opportunist.
  5. George WIll abhors the politics of preference.  He thinks Democrats promote female and minority candidates over male and white ones, even when the male and white ones are better standard bearers.
  6. Or he is afraid of how our democracy, in spite of everything, keeps managing to move the needle toward equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.
  7. Will is trying to atone for his recent comments about women which cast him as a tone-deaf stodgy old misogynist.
  8. George Will is a tone-deaf stodgy old misogynist.
  9. Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren are both women.
  10. Anyone see a pattern here?
